Hexagram 2, The Receptive — the six lines

Classical meaning

The Receptive brings supreme success. The perseverance of a mare is favorable. The noble finds benefit in undertaking. Going early leads to error; going late leads to success. There is benefit in having a master. In the southwest, friends; in the northeast, loss of friends. Perseverance brings good fortune.

坤。元。亨。利牝馬之貞。君子有攸往。先迷後得主。利。西南得朋。東北喪朋。安貞吉。

Image: The condition of the earth is receptive and nurturing. Thus, the superior man, with his encompassing virtue, sustains the world.

It represents the pure yin principle, receptive and nurturing. It symbolizes patience, acceptance, and the capacity to nurture.

The six lines

Line 1. The Receptive – Treading on frost foretells that firm ice will come. Recognize the subtle signs of the future. Anticipate and prepare for more challenging times.
Line 2. The Receptive – Straight, square, and great. Even without practice, nothing will be unfavorable. Trust in the strength of natural integrity. Clear virtue sustains effortlessly.
Line 3. The Receptive – Preserve inner beauty. It can be steadfast. If one follows the ruler in his duties without immediate success, a favorable outcome will be attained. Cultivate patience and humility. Service may seem fruitless, but it will bring fulfillment in the end.
Line 4. The Receptive – Closing the bag. No blame, no praise. Maintain reserve and discretion. Silence protects, even if it does not bring glory.
Line 5. The Receptive – Wearing the yellow skirt. Supreme fortune. Adopt moderation as your guide. Simple virtue attracts great blessing.
Line 6. The Receptive – Dragons fight in the field. Their blood is black and yellow. Avoid conflicts between equally powerful forces. The clash inevitably results in losses for both sides.
