Hexagram 30, The Clinging (Fire) — the six lines

Classical meaning

Fire. Perseverance is favorable. Success. Raising a gentle cow brings good fortune.

離。利貞。亨。畜牝牛。吉。

Image: Fire clings to that upon which it shines: the image of fire. Thus, the noble one makes his clarity radiant.

It speaks of clarity, awareness, luminous presence, and adherence to what is true.

The six lines

Line 1. Walking with caution and reverence, there is no error. Begin any path with care and reverence, for initial discipline prevents future errors.
Line 2. Yellow light. Great fortune. Seek the light of the middle path, balanced and serene. Moderation fosters enduring prosperity.
Line 3. The sun declines. It does not beat the drum, but sings; it is the lament of old age. Ruin. Do not allow energy to be wasted in belated lamentations. Act while there is vitality; inertia leads to regret.
Line 4. Suddenly it arrives, burns, destroys, and abandons. Avoid outbursts of passion or anger. What arises abruptly and uncontrollably leads to loss and emptiness.
Line 5. Tears flow, profound sorrow. Yet the outcome is auspicious. Accept sadness as part of the path. From suffering arises clarity and renewal, bringing good fortune.
Line 6. The king goes on an expedition. Honor and victory. He cuts off the enemy's head, but not that of his own people. No mistake. At the height of strength, wield power with justice. Combat what is harmful, yet preserve those under your protection.
