Hexagram 31, The Influence — the six lines

Classical meaning

Success. Perseverance is favorable. Taking a wife brings good fortune.

咸。亨。利貞。取女吉。

Image: A lake rests upon the mountain: the image of influence. Thus the noble one opens his heart in receiving.

It refers to the subtle force that moves the hearts — attraction, empathy, and openness.

The six lines

Line 1. Influence – Sensitivity in the toes. Caution in the initial steps; the influence is still fragile and requires firmness.
Line 2. Influence – Sensitivity in the calves. Ominous. Remaining brings auspice. Avoid being swept away by impulses. If you maintain your position, you will find balance.
Line 3. Influence – Sensitivity in the thighs. Following impulsively brings humiliation. Control desires. Acting without reflection leads to regret.
Line 4. Influence – Integrity brings auspiciousness and removes regret. Amid advances and retreats, friends follow their intention. Even in doubt, maintain righteousness. Others will recognize your integrity.
Line 5. Influence – Sensitivity on the back. No regret. Trust in the silent influence. There is no need for regret.
Line 6. Influence – Sensitivity in the jaws, cheeks, and tongue. Be vigilant in what you say and express. The greatest influence is exerted through communication.
