Hexagram 49, The Revolution — the six lines

Classical meaning

Revolution. On the day of the serpent, there is confidence. Great success. It is favorable to be constant. Regret disappears.

革。巳日乃孚。元亨利貞。悔亡。

Image: Fire over the lake: the image of revolution. The superior man organizes time and renews the orders.

Necessary transformation, severing old patterns for evolution.

The six lines

Line 1. The Revolution – Firmness is necessary: strengthening oneself like yellow oxhide ensures stability. Before acting, strengthen yourself with firmness and discipline, so that the transformation does not unravel.
Line 2. The Revolution – On the right day, change must occur. Advancing is auspicious, without error. Do not anticipate nor delay changes. When the time comes, act with clarity and confidence.
Line 3. The Revolution – Advancing at an inopportune moment brings danger. Words of change must be spoken three times; only then will there be trust. Before executing a transformation, ensure that everyone understands and trusts the decision.
Line 4. The Revolution – Regret disappears. With confidence, changing destiny is auspicious. Trust in the legitimacy of change: it will bring righteousness and remove doubts from the past.
Line 5. The Revolution – The great man transforms like a tiger; even before the consultation, there is confidence. Transform yourself in an authentic and undeniable manner. When truth is evident, it requires no justification.
Line 6. The Revolution – The noble man transforms like a leopard, while the common man merely changes his face. Advancing is perilous; remaining steadfast is auspicious. Cultivate internal transformations, not merely external ones. Advancing without reflection entails risk; maintaining integrity ensures prosperity.
