Hexagram 48, The Well — the six lines

Classical meaning

The Well. The city changes, the well does not change. No loss nor gain. They come and go to the well. Almost arriving, if the bucket is not secured, it breaks: ominous.

井。改邑不改井。無喪無得。往來井井。汔至。亦未繘井。羸其瓶。凶。

Image: Water over wood: the image of the well. The superior man encourages the people to cooperate and preserve that which nourishes all.

It speaks of the essence that sustains all — the inner source, spiritual nourishment.

The six lines

Line 1. The Well – Mud at the bottom of the well, the water is undrinkable. An old abandoned well has no birds. Avoid remaining in stagnant and unproductive situations. It is necessary to cleanse and renew in order to gain benefit.
Line 2. The Well – In the valley of the well, a small fish is caught. The jar is worn and leaking. Review your means before seeking results. Fragile resources do not support great achievements.
Line 3. The Well – The well has been cleaned but not yet drawn from. This evokes compassion. It can be used to draw water, and if the king is wise, all will receive his blessing. Prepare yourself and remain available, even if you are not yet valued. The opportunity will come, and your contribution will be acknowledged.
Line 4. The Well – The well is lined with stones: firm and secure, there is no fault. Strengthen the foundations before seeking greater depth. A solid structure ensures continuous utility.
Line 5. The Well – The water is fresh, clear, and drinkable like a cold spring. Cultivate inner clarity and purity. Like clean water, your influence will become vital and beneficial.
Line 6. The Well – It is used without the need for a cover. There is trust and great auspiciousness. Share your resources and virtues freely. Trust and openness strengthen everyone.
