Classical meaning

The Traveler. Small success. The firmness of the traveler is auspicious.

旅。小亨。旅貞吉。

Image: Fire over the mountain: the image of the traveler. The superior man is clear and cautious, moderating his conduct away from home.

Speaks of transience, detachment, and humility on the path.

The six lines

Line 1. The traveler is petty and scattered. This leads him to misfortunes. When traveling, maintain dignity and clarity. Do not cling to the trivial to avoid attracting misfortune.
Line 2. The traveler finds lodging. He guards his belongings and gains a faithful servant. Good fortune. Accept help and learn to trust. The journey becomes safe when there is support.
Line 3. The traveler loses his lodging, consumed by fire. He also loses the servant. Perseverance leads to danger. Beware of arrogance or recklessness. Without prudence, the journey brings loss and humiliation.
Line 4. The traveler finds a place of rest and resources. Even so, his heart is not content. Peace resides not merely in resources, but in the spirit. Cultivate serenity even in foreign lands.
Line 5. Shoot at the pheasant: you lose the first arrow, but in the end you gain recognition and a good reputation. Persistence generates prestige, even after failures. Do not give up because of temporary losses.
Line 6. The bird has its nest burned. The traveler first laughs, then weeps and laments. Loses the ox with ease. Misfortune. Do not underestimate the dangers of a wandering life. If you act with arrogance or negligence, downfall will be inevitable.
