Hexagram 64 — Before Completion Wei Ji
Classical meaning
Success. The little fox almost crosses; it wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.
未濟。亨。小狐汔濟。濡其尾。無攸利。
Image: Fire over water: the image of before completion. The superior man is careful in distinguishing things and attentive until completion.

The six lines
Line 1. Before Completion – Wet the tail. Regrettable. Do not advance hastily. Stepping back half a pace prevents the initial error.
Line 2. Before Completion – The wheel drags. Rectitude is auspicious. Maintain a steady and proper rhythm. Carefulness now prevents greater problems.
Line 3. Before Completion – Advancing brings misfortune. It is favorable to cross the great river. Avoid hasty minor undertakings. Prepare for the decisive moment and then act.
Line 4. Before Completion – Righteousness brings good fortune and regret dissipates. The thunder advances against the Gui-fang; in three years there is reward from the great State. Persevere with method and ethics. Mature victory requires time and constancy.
Line 5. Before Completion – Auspicious rectitude, without regret. The light of the noble man. With sincerity, there is good fortune. Be a beacon of integrity. Sustained sincerity dispels doubts and brings support.
Line 6. Before Completion – Sincerity when drinking wine: without guilt. The head is drenched; with sincerity, one loses direction. Enjoy in moderation. If confidence turns into excess, you will lose direction in the end.
