Hexagram 17 — The Following Sui
Classical meaning
Great success. Perseverance is favorable. No blame.
隨。元亨利貞。無咎。
Image: Thunder over the lake: the image of following. Thus the noble withdraws at dusk and rests.
It speaks of the wisdom in adapting, recognizing leadership, and following the proper flow.

The six lines
Line 1. Following – There is change in office/government. Righteousness is auspicious. Going out and associating brings merit. Accept changes in direction with integrity. Go into the world, connect, and serve: from this will come fruits.
Line 2. Follow – Clinging to the small causes one to lose the man (the superior). Do not cling to immature or petty influences. Seek those who elevate your character.
Line 3. Following – Clinging to the “man” causes loss of the “small.” Following with seeking brings attainment. It is favorable to remain upright. Align yourself with the best. With clear purpose and integrity, what you seek will come.
Line 4. Following – There is gain in following, but blind persistence is disastrous. With sincerity on the Way and clarity, what fault could there be? Do not follow solely out of self-interest. Reaffirm the righteous intention: with sincerity and clarity, the risk dissipates.
Line 5. Following – Sincerity in what is excellent. Good fortune. Direct loyalty toward what is worthy. The beauty of the just attracts cooperation and success.
Line 6. Following – Bound and tied, then follows through bonds. The king celebrates the sacrifice on the Western Mountain. Assume the bond in a solemn and visible manner. Consecrate your commitment to the greater good, and there will be no regret.
