Hexagram 19, The Approach — the six lines

Classical meaning

Great success. Perseverance is favorable. In the eighth month, there will be misfortune.

臨。元亨利貞。至于八月有凶。

Image: The earth above the lake: the image of approach. Thus the noble one is tireless in teaching and boundless in nurturing.

It concerns the movement toward the other with sincerity and openness.

The six lines

Line 1. Sincere approach. Perseverance is favorable and brings good fortune. Approach with sincerity and clarity of intention. Honesty paves secure paths.
Line 2. Sincere approach brings good fortune. Nothing will be unfavorable. With open and sincere attitudes, everything flows naturally. Do not fear consequences: trust guides the way.
Line 3. Indulgent approach. Nothing useful results. Upon recognizing the concern, there will be no guilt. Avoid complacency. If you realize you have been led astray by illusions, return to the path of responsibility to avoid falling into error.
Line 4. Full approach. Without guilt. Act with firm and upright presence. When the attitude is correct, there is nothing to fear.
Line 5. Wise approach is the proper conduct of a great leader. Good fortune. Cultivate leadership grounded in clarity and understanding. Approaching with wisdom strengthens all around.
Line 6. Deep and dedicated approach. Good fortune, without guilt. Demonstrate commitment and consistency in your relationships and projects. True closeness requires perseverance and dedication.
