Hexagram 33 — The Retreat Dun

Success. The perseverance of a small effort brings benefit.
遯。亨。小利貞。
Image: The sky above the mountain: the image of withdrawal. Thus the noble protects his will from harmful influences.

The six lines
Line 1. The Retreat – Withdrawing by the tail is dangerous. Do not advance. Do not insist when the moment has passed. Stop before worsening the situation.
Line 2. The Retreat – Bound with yellow oxhide; no one can release it. Establish your resolve to withdraw and allow no hesitation. Discipline protects you.
Line 3. The Retreat – Bound to retreat. There is illness and danger. Keeping servants and assistants under control is auspicious. Organize what is under your responsibility and avoid imprudent commitments. Restraint and order minimize harm.
Line 4. The Retreat – A good retreat. For the noble man, auspicious; for the small man, not. To retreat on principle is the virtue of the upright. Those who seek immediate gain will not understand this movement.
Line 5. The Retreat – A beautiful retreat; persistence is auspicious. Sustain the correct decision until the end. A well-managed withdrawal prepares a stronger return.
Line 6. The Retreat – Complete and tranquil retreat. Nothing is unfavorable. Complete the withdrawal with serenity and do not look back. The attained security favors new beginnings.
