Hexagram 39, The Obstruction — the six lines

Classical meaning

It is favorable to proceed southwest; it is not favorable to proceed northeast. It is favorable to see the great man. Perseverance brings good fortune.

蹇。利西南。不利東北。利見大人。貞吉。

Image: Water above the mountain: the image of obstruction. Thus the noble one turns inward and cultivates his will.

The six lines

Line 1. The Obstruction – Advancing encounters obstacles; retreating brings recognition. Do not insist on advancing against obstacles. A timely retreat can preserve honor.
Line 2. The Obstruction – The minister faces difficulties, but not due to his own actions. Even in the face of the burden of duty, maintain your integrity. The greater cause justifies the effort.
Line 3. The Obstruction – Advancing creates difficulty, retreating brings reflection. Accept the limit of the moment. Turning inward may reveal the right direction.
Line 4. The Obstruction – Advancing is difficult; returning leads to union. Do not struggle alone against obstacles. Seek alliance and solidarity in retreat.
Line 5. The Obstruction – Great difficulty, but friends draw near. Adversity calls for true support. Trust in alliances to overcome the blockage.
Line 6. The Obstruction – Advancing encounters great obstacles, but retreating brings fulfillment. It is auspicious. It is favorable to see the great man. Accept the greatness of limitation and seek the guidance of a superior. This will bring resolution and blessing.
