Hexagram 41, The Diminishing — the six lines

Classical meaning

Decrease. With sincerity, great fortune. Without fault, one can remain correct. It is favorable to undertake. What is it for? Two bowls are sufficient for the offering.

損。有孚。元吉。無咎。可貞。利有攸往。曷之用。二簋可用享。

Image: Mountain over the lake: the image of diminution. The superior man restrains excess and shares what remains with those in need.

It represents the conscious act of reducing the superfluous to strengthen the essential.

The six lines

Line 1. The Decrease – Matters already accomplished: hasten to advance. No fault. Adjust the decrease. Do not delay after completing something. Acting swiftly ensures that loss does not become greater harm.
Line 2. The Decrease – Favorable to integrity. If embarking on an expedition, misfortune will occur. Do not diminish, but add. Maintain integrity and do not seek gains through force. Moderation will bring lasting benefits.
Line 3. The Diminishing – Three traveling together: one is lost. One traveling alone: finds a companion. Avoid dispersing yourself in unfocused groups. Authenticity in the solitary journey brings genuine allies.
Line 4. The Diminishing – Reducing illness brings sudden joy. No blame. Rid yourself of harmful habits, and you will find immediate relief. What is removed creates space for good.
Line 5. The Decrease – Perhaps they will add to you a turtle with ten shells. It cannot be refused. Supreme fortune. Accept the gifts of destiny with gratitude. Acknowledge the value of what is offered and use it with wisdom.
Line 6. The Decrease – Not to diminish, but to add. No blame. Integrity brings fortune. It is favorable to have a place to go. One obtains attendants, but without a home. Even in times of loss, destiny may surprise with gain. Use it rightly and with humility.
