Hexagram 47, The Oppression — the six lines

Classical meaning

Oppression. Success. The firmness of the great man is auspicious. No blame. Words are not believed.

困。亨。貞。大人吉。無咎。有言不信。

Image: Lake without water: the image of oppression. The superior man strengthens his inner self and is not disheartened by external setbacks.

Situation of fatigue, pressure, or restriction — requires endurance and faith.

The six lines

Line 1. Oppression – Bound at the base of a tree, one enters a dark valley, finding no way out for years. Accept limitation without forcing an escape. Withdrawal prepares for future overcoming.
Line 2. Oppression – Confined amid banquets and wine, yet official dignity approaches. It is favorable to offer sacrifices. If undertaken, there will be danger, but no blame. Avoid becoming lost in empty pleasures. Use faith and devotion as paths to overcome limitations.
Line 3. The Oppression – Trapped between stones and thorns, he enters his own house and does not find his wife. Misfortune. Do not harden your stance excessively. Excessive withdrawal leads to distancing and personal losses.
Line 4. Oppression – Advances slowly, bound to a metal chariot. Humiliation, yet there will be an outcome. Accept temporary limitations. Patience allows one to reach a stable outcome even amid discomfort.
Line 5. Oppression – Endures mutilations and restrictions adorned with red ornaments. Gradually finds relief. It is favorable to perform sacrifices. Endure difficulties with faith and discipline. Worship and spirituality bring gradual liberation.
Line 6. Oppression – Bound by vines in instability. Movement brings regret, but also regret for inaction. If undertaken, it will be auspicious. Do not remain trapped in indecision. Embrace the risk of action, for conscious movement dissolves the bonds.
