Hexagram 7 — The Army Shi
Classical meaning
Perseverance. The old man brings good fortune. No blame.
師。貞。丈人。吉無咎。
Image: On the earth, there is water stored: the image of the army. The superior man nourishes the people and embraces the multitude.
It represents organization, collective strength, and leadership in times of challenge.

The six lines
Line 1. The army marches according to the rules. If discipline fails, disaster ensues. Leadership must be based on firm discipline. Without order, even strength becomes weakness.
Line 2. In the midst of the army, auspicious. No blame. The king grants the mission three times. Remain centered, loyal, and trustworthy. The leader’s trust multiplies the strength of their position.
Line 3. The army may carry corpses. Disastrous. Avoid following incompetent leaders or disastrous strategies. Poorly conducted war results in devastating losses.
Line 4. The army camps on the left. No blame. Know when to retreat or reposition yourself. Sometimes, avoiding direct confrontation is the wisest choice.
Line 5. In the hunt, one finds prey. It is proper to keep one's word. Without fault. The eldest son leads the army, the youngest leads the corpses. Righteousness brings misfortune. Entrust command to the most mature and capable. Role reversal breeds danger and failure.
Line 6. The great prince has a mandate: he opens kingdoms and sustains families. The petty man must not be employed. When power is granted, employ only those of noble character. Avoid entrusting great tasks to the unworthy.
