Classical meaning

Union brings good fortune. Initial consultation brings lasting perseverance. No blame. Those who are not at peace draw near. The last to arrive encounters misfortune.

比。吉。原筮元永貞。無咎。不寧方來。後夫凶。

The six lines

Line 1. With confidence, one unites. No error. Confidence fills the vessel; in the end, something good will come. Trust others with an open heart. Shared faith strengthens unity and brings prosperity.
Line 2. Union arises from within. Integrity brings good fortune. Maintain righteousness and cultivate unity from within. When the heart is sincere, unity flourishes.
Line 3. Union with people who are not righteous. Avoid associating with improper or ill-natured individuals. Bad company leads one astray.
Line 4. Union with outsiders. Righteousness brings good fortune. Open yourself to external alliances. When the union is just and proper, it brings lasting benefits.
Line 5. Manifested union. The king hunts on three sides, leaving the front open. The people of the city require no warning. Good fortune. True union neither forces nor oppresses, but attracts through example and generosity.
Line 6. Union without a head. Misfortune. Do not join groups or causes without clear leadership. Union without guidance leads to failure.
