Classical meaning

Walking on the tiger's tail. It does not bite the man. Success.

履。履虎尾。不咥人。亨。

Image: The sky above the lake: the image of conduct. The superior man distinguishes between the high and the low and strengthens the people's mind.

It speaks of proper conduct in delicate situations. Ethics and attentiveness are essential.

The six lines

Line 1. Tread with simplicity. Proceed forward without error. Remain authentic and simple in your initial steps. Humility at the beginning ensures there are no stumbles.
Line 2. Follow the path in a straightforward and clear manner. The reserved man upholds righteousness and attains happiness. Be firm and discreet. By walking with integrity, the journey becomes safe and prosperous.
Line 3. Blind, yet able to see. Lame, yet able to walk. Steps on the tiger’s tail and is bitten. The man of arms serves the ruler. Do not underestimate risks. Acknowledge limits before challenging greater forces. Courage without clarity may bring misfortune.
Line 4. Step cautiously on the tiger's tail. In the end, good fortune. Advance with prudence. Danger is present, but if there is caution and attentiveness, the outcome will be favorable.
Line 5. The determined conduct. It remains firm, yet is perilous. At the peak, use strength with moderation. Firmness is necessary, but it must be balanced by prudence to avoid greater risks.
Line 6. Observe conduct and examine omens. Upon completing the cycle, good fortune follows. At the apex, when the cycle is complete, it is not time to act, but to reflect. Acknowledge the fullness attained, give thanks for the fruits, and prepare for the approaching transition.
