Hexagram 12 — The Obstacle Pi
Classical meaning
The hindrance of the base man. Perseverance of the noble is not favorable. The great withdraws, the small approaches.
否之匪人。不利君子貞。大往小來。
Image: Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of obstruction. The noble withdraws his inner influence and takes refuge in his valor.
It refers to blockage, lack of communication, and distancing.

The six lines
Line 1. Uproot the grass, pulling it out by its roots. Follow along with the group. Firmness brings good fortune. Proceed onward. Remain steadfast and seek support from like-minded individuals. Unity strengthens even in times of stagnation.
Line 2. Bearing and enduring. For the small man, it is favorable; for the great man, stagnation. Yet, one continues. Adapt to circumstances, but do not abase yourself. Know that, in times of blockage, elevated virtue encounters greater obstacles.
Line 3. Carrying shame. Accept humiliation as part of the moment. Do not struggle against greater forces now; resistance may only increase the burden.
Line 4. There is order in destiny; there is no fault. Companions unite in blessing. Trust in the greater order and accept what cannot be changed. There is relief when one follows destiny with integrity.
Line 5. Resting in stagnation. The noble man finds good fortune. He is lost, he is lost! — yet the support is firmly rooted like the mulberry tree. Do not fear apparent losses. Inner firmness and strong roots enable the noble man to overcome stagnation.
Line 6. Stagnation dissolves. First obstruction, then joy. Recognize that stagnation is not eternal. After difficulty comes joy. Remain steadfast until the cycle changes.
