Hexagram 34, The Power of the Great — the six lines

Classical meaning

Perseverance is favorable.

大壯。利貞。

Image: The thunder in the sky: the image of the power of the great. Thus the noble does not tread paths that are not in accordance with the law.

It expresses strength and power, but must be used with wisdom.

The six lines

Line 1. The Great Power – Strength in the toes. Advancing is disastrous, even with sincerity. Do not hasten the initial steps. Misguided strength leads to downfall.
Line 2. The Great Power – Correct perseverance brings good success. Use your energy with firmness and integrity, and success will come.
Line 3. The Great Power – The petty use force; the noble man avoids it. Even with firmness, there is danger. The goat butts against the fence and gets its horns stuck. Avoid using force recklessly. Obstinacy leads to blockage.
Line 4. The Great Power – Correct perseverance brings good success, regret disappears. The fence breaks, no harm occurs. Strength like that of the axle of a great carriage. Direct your strength with justice. Fluidity removes obstacles.
Line 5. The Great Power – Losing the goat easily. No regret. Do not cling to what can be lost. Releasing what burdens brings lightness.
Line 6. The Great Power – The goat charges against the fence. It cannot advance nor retreat. Nothing is favorable. Yet, amid difficulty, there is good success. Do not fight the inevitable. Accept the limitations and transform them into wisdom.
