Hexagram 36, The Darkening of the Light — the six lines

Classical meaning

It is favorable to persevere through difficulties.

明夷。利艱貞。

Image: The sun sinks below the earth: the image of the darkening of light. Thus the noble one lives with great inner radiance, even amid adversity.

It refers to the necessity of concealing the light in the face of danger.

The six lines

Line 1. The Darkening of the Light – The light strikes in mid-flight, the wings fall. The noble man, on his journey, fasts for three days. If he advances, the lord murmurs against him. In times of adversity, maintain your dignity and resilience, even when strength or external support is lacking.
Line 2. The Darkening of the Light – The light is wounded in the left thigh. However, rescuing it with a strong horse brings good success. Accept firm and reliable assistance. Even in weakness, with support, it is possible to overcome danger.
Line 3. The Darkening of the Light – In the southern hunt, capture the great prey. It is not possible to maintain constant firmness. Act at the right moment. It is not always possible to uphold everything with absolute righteousness, but decisive action will bear fruit.
Line 4. The Darkening of the Light – Penetrates the left abdomen and attains the heart of the Darkening of the Light. Upon exiting through the gate, clarity is found. Seek the root of the matter within what is hidden. By understanding the inner self, clarity is attained in the external world.
Line 5. The Darkening of the Light – The fate of Ji Zi, who endured obscurity but maintained his integrity. Perseverance is favorable. Even under oppression and injustice, integrity must remain unwavering. Righteousness is the greatest protection.
Line 6. The Darkening of the Light – There is no light, only darkness. First it rises to the sky, then sinks into the earth. Beware of excess. He who elevates himself too much may be cast into the deepest darkness.
